What are the types of solar cells?

Solar energy is a good way to power a home, but it needs a reliable battery to store energy. There are several types of solar cells to choose from, and it's hard to determine which one is right for you. For example, depending on your budget and energy needs, you may prefer lithium-ion batteries because of their long life, small size, or lead-acid batteries, because they are affordable. Let's see how to buy solar panels.

Lead acid battery.

Lead-acid solar cells are the oldest and cheapest of the five. They are commonly used in automotive and industrial applications. However, with the popularity of battery energy storage in China, other technologies with longer warranty periods and lower prices are rapidly replacing lead-acid batteries.

Although lead-acid batteries are the cheapest of these types, they generally have a short service life, low discharge depth, and require regular maintenance. Experts recommend that the discharge depth of lead-acid batteries should not exceed 50%, so as not to have a negative impact on their service life.

Lithium-ion battery.

Lithium-ion batteries are the most common solar panels, offering smaller, lighter, and more efficient options than lead-acid batteries. They are usually the most expensive of the four types, but they are also the most efficient and longest-lived.

Lithium-ion batteries can also easily handle 80% or more deep discharges, which means they have higher usable capacity.

However, if not installed properly, they can cause a risk of thermal runaway and may catch fire. All in all, with the support of the electric vehicle industry and Tesla Energy Company's hot-selling products, lithium-ion batteries are developing rapidly. It is expected that lithium-ion batteries will become the most popular choice for grid-connected solar cell storage in the foreseeable future.

Nickel-cadmium battery.

Nickel-cadmium batteries are known for their ability to operate at extreme temperatures without any complex battery management system, which makes them more popular in commercial-scale projects. However, they are considered by many to be an ancient technology and are banned in many countries because of their high toxicity. High toxicity also means that they are not the safest option, and users may prefer more modern battery types, such as lithium-ion batteries or mobile solar cells.

Flow battery

Flow batteries, despite being a new storage solution that still requires improvements, are becoming a popular option due to their ability to achieve a 100% depth of discharge, allowing for the entire stored energy to be used. They are also non-toxic as they are water-based, making them a safer option compared to nickel-cadmium batteries.
